Cute but Cheap Farmhouse Decor Finds on Amazon

If only I had the budget of the Fixer Upper crew! I’d have our cozy little home turned into a San Diego farmhouse in no time. There’s a little shop near us that creates custom designed farm tables, up to 12 feet long. Unfortunately, we’re making do for now with pre-made Farmbouse decor on Amazon. Today I’m rounding up some pieces that are super cute and won’t break the bank! And the best part is that, as of right now, they’re all on Prime so I can have them at my doorstep in less than 48 hours. Check out these cheap farmhouse finds on Amazon:

Farmhouse Decor You Can Afford

Did you know you can buy barn doors Amazon? That’s a little out of our price range at the moment. If barn doors or a custom table are too expensive, then most big pieces on Amazon probably are too. No matter what your home looks like, it will have a much more farmhouse-y feel with some simple accessories.

Remember back when I shared about easy everyday table decor? I had recently been to a decorating presentation by a local woman who works as a stylist for showcase homes. She was all over eucalyptus in everything. So I went out and cut some branches from a eucalyptus tree down the street. The table did look nice for a while. But pretty soon the leaves dried and the snippets of eucalyptus lost their fresh green luster.

Savor the look of fresh greenery all year long with some artificial eucalyptus or cheery faux hydrangea.

Creating a Farmhouse Look in a Small Home

We have a pretty small living space, and it’s shared by 6 people. So I totally understand the frustration when it comes to the cluttered feeling of a small space home. But you can still get that cute farmhouse look with a few simple tricks.

Use a lot of white and neutral colors to open up the space. Burlap, white-painted vintage items, and bright white flowers are quick and easy farmhouse-style pieces. This burlap table runner and vintage vase are on Amazon.

Add one or two eye-catching pieces to set the farmhouse decor tone. A rustic wall organizer or vintage cabinet with chalkboard can make it look like you’re an awesome thrift-store-finding-D.I.Y.-er… It’s ok, we won’t tell anyone that you got it on Amazon. 😉

Compliment the Things you Already Have in your Home with Farmhouse Decor Accents

Add a simple touch like a little mason jar wall decoration. Or give any space a “lazy summer day” vibe with a string of indoor/outdoor globe lights.

A tight budget shouldn’t prevent you from getting the farmhouse decor look you crave in your home. It just takes some piecing together (and a bit of eucalyptus!) to make your home feel like Joanna Gaines has been there.

Sanity-Savers for Spring Cleaning with Kids

This post is sponsored by The Libman Company but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

Now that the weather is warming up, it’s a good time to spruce up your interior! When you have little ones in the home, this is sometimes easier said than done. This weekend we broke out the suds and scrub brushes. I’d love to share with you some of my sanity-savers for spring cleaning with kids.

Make a List of What you want to Clean

Before you get started, it’s best to have a plan. List the areas of the house you want to clean, and be specific. Instead of listing “refrigerator”, write what you will do to clean the refrigerator, such as “wash refrigerator drawers, scrub door handles, and defrost the freezer.” Be realistic in what you plan to accomplish. If you have small children, this may not be the time to detail the garage and pressure wash your house on your own.

Get the Kids Involved

There are plenty of things kids can do to help clean the house. Give them a bucket of sudsy water and have them scrub the walls. While the quality of cleaning done by kids may not meet White House standards, it keeps them out of your way when they help out. As a bonus, they’re learning responsibility and life skills! They even get a little excited if you let them use “official” cleaning gloves! 🙂

Stick with Simple Equipment

You don’t need a lot of gear to spring clean your house. Some basics are:

  • A bucket or dish pan for sudsy water
  • Sponges or strong scrubbing brushes
  • Some cloths or old rags
  • A spray bottle
  • Your favorite cleaning solutions
  • A good mop

This weekend we tried out the Libman WonderÂŽ Mop and I really love it! I’ve been hesitant to sue mops in the past because all that water is such a pain. It’s no fun trying to keep kids out of the kitchen for hours while the floor is drying. Thankfully, the WonderÂŽ Mop has a power wringer that gets out more water so the floors dry faster. It works on all surfaces, so anyone can use it!

To use the WonderÂŽ Mop, you’ll first want to make sure you sweep up all the big stuff on the floor.

Then simply soak the microfiber mop head thoroughly. Pressing the power wringer towards the mop head, squeeze out the excess water.

Snap the power wringer back into place and you’re ready to go! The WonderÂŽ Mop’s microfiber GRIPSTRIPS™ lift 20% more dirt, leaving your floors even cleaner. It’s so easy to use, you’ll be done with the floors in no time and can get back to tending to your little ones!

Another thing I dislike about using a mop is figuring out what to do with it when I’m done mopping. I mean, I could lean it up against a wall or something but the residue of all that icky stuff from my floor is probably lurking in the fibers. But with the WonderÂŽ Mop, you can remove the mop head and toss it in the washing machine up to 50 times!

Right now, you can save $3 when you sign up for the Libman newsletter. Check the website for tutorials, tips, and where to buy the Libman WonderÂŽ Mop!

Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring is the perfect time to shake off the dust of winter and prepare for warmer days. This year, use spring cleaning as an opportunity to freshen up your entire home, inside and out. The best way to do this is to make it a family affair. Include kids, and divide the chores up. Remember, you only do most of these things once a year, so do a good job. And don’t be overwhelmed, these things can be done over a few different weeks. Knock out some on nice weekends when you can get outside and enjoy some fresh air, and save others for rainy days when you’ll be inside all day.

This spring cleaning checklist is broken up by areas of the home. Just tackle each item one at a time and before you know it, your home will be ready for spring.

6 Simple Storage Hacks to Organize your Small Home

You don’t have to live in a tiny home to feel like your space is too small. People often say they’ve “outgrown” their home because they’ve lived there for so long that there is more stuff than the house can hold. We’ve lived in a 3-bedroom apartment for 10 years. During that time we’ve added 3 more family members and LOTS more stuff. I’ve learned to take control of the clutter and find creative ways to deal with storage. These are just a few of our storage hacks to organize our small home.

6 Simple Storage Hacks to Organize your Small Home

Look high We built in extra shelving everywhere we could. There’s one in the bathroom, above the kitchen sink (pictured below from my “let’s add a pop of blue color to every room in the apartment” phase), one in the cupboard above the stove, one in the living room and one by the front door. Our closets have a huge space above the standard shelf, so we added a second shelf in each one. These aren’t pretty but, except for here in this post, no one ever sees them. If your home is short on square footage, store high up!

add storage to small home with extra shelves in closets

Double-duty shelves We get a little extra storage out of some shelves by adding these nifty under-the-shelf organizers. The shelves are pretty high, so this gives us some storage that’s easier for me to reach.

under the shelf extra storage

Wrap it up tight Sure, you can buy a compact plastic storage bin to store wrapping paper in the garage. But what if you don’t have a garage? We took some wire, looped through a few hooks, and zig-zagged it across the ceiling of one of the closets. All we have to do is slide the wrapping paper between the wire and the ceiling and it’s out of sight until we need it!

Nothing to see here Every bed in our home has something stored under it. Use shallow plastic storage bins under the bed to store toys, mementos, photos, etc.

When is a seat not a seat? A fellow teacher introduced me to the idea of using storage bins that double as an ottoman! We have one in our living room and I’ve always had one in my classroom as well. This is one you can get from Amazon, but I’ve seen a similar type at Big Lots as well. We filled ours with throw blankets.

Decorative baskets make clutter look pretty One cute basket holds all the things that end up getting stashed near the TV, like remotes and game controllers. Unfortunately, getting the family trained to put the remote back so we can find it when we need it is a story for another post!

Our family is still far from tidy. But we do our best to give everything in its place. These simple storage hacks are just a few ways we organize our small home. Do you have a creative storage hack? Please share in the comments!

How the Echo Show Brings our Family Together

This post was sponsored by Amazon as part of an Ambassador Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

This winter we discovered how our Echo Dot Kids Edition can bring Christmas magic to our little ones. Today I want to tell you about our other Amazon device, the Echo Show. Every since we added this device to our home, I can’t help but be surprised at how the Echo Show brings our family together.

What is an Echo Show?

The Echo Show is one of Amazon’s smart home devices, part of the Alexa family. We use Amazon FreeTime on Alexa, which, first and foremost, has parental controls that help us keep our kids safe while using the device. We decided to turn off voice purchasing, and block explicit song lyrics with Amazon Music. Most of the time our kids ask Alexa to play the kid-friendly songs they’re already familiar with. Being able to set restrictions using the Parent Dashboard gives me peace of mind that they are enjoying a kid-centric Alexa experience on the Echo Dot Kids Edition and Echo Show. Amazon FreeTime also includes educational skills like Name that Animal. The Alexa app offers hundreds of more awesome skills focused specifically on children’s education! With Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, we can listen to over 1,000 kids books on Audible. We simply have to ask, “Alexa, read me Peter Pan.”

How We’re Coming Together with Our Echo Show

I can’t emphasize enough how every day we discover new and fun ways to interact with our Echo Show. And you know what the kids are NOT doing during that time? Zoning out in front of the TV! They’ve figured out some things that I didn’t even know Alexa could do, like take a selfie. Now our Echo Show displays a rotation of silly faces compliments of my little cuties! With our Echo Show we are also:

Baking chocolate chip cookies. “Alexa, show me a recipe for chocolate cookies.”

Having a dance party. “Alexa, play our family playlist.”

Learning about the world around us. “Alexa, show me the pyramids of Egypt.”

Finding out more about the recent Super Blood Wolf Moon. “Alexa, what’s happening with the moon tonight?”

Other Ways We Enjoy Alexa

One great things about Alexa is that she keeps us organized. We tell Alexa to set a 30 minute timer for the washer so we can keep our clothes moving through the laundromat quickly. Our kids love watching the last 10 seconds count down on the Echo Show! Now they set timers for everything they can think of, like teeth brushing, bath time, and homework time. Alexa also helps us by creating a list, setting reminders, and adding events to our calendar! Yes, all these things could be taken care of by myself or John, but we like that the kids are getting involved in the household. Plus, Alexa us just plain fun! She has a constant supply of jokes, and we have ours set up so that Jimmy Fallon delivers them to us.  Family laughing to Jimmy Fallon jokes on the Echo Show

Smart devices like the Echo Dot Kids Edition and the Echo Show can bring our family together. They also simplify our lives and help us stay organized. Check out Amazon Kids and Family on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to see how families are incorporating these awesome devices into their home.

Laundry Systems that Work for Busy Moms

The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free.

When you’re a mom on the go, the last thing you want to deal with is needing finding out the clothes you need for the next daily event are dirty. I’m dealing 6 people’s activities, plus keeping up with all the outfits, uniforms, and work attire that go with them. It’s a lot to manage. I’ve tried plenty of strategies, and I hope at least one of these laundry systems will work for you.

Teach your kids to sort

If you find that sorting is a pain, then show your kids how to take responsibility of this task. Teach them that socks/whites go in one hamper, darks/jeans go in another one, and light colored laundry goes in a third. They’re bound to make a few mistakes. But it will be easier to catch a loose white sock in the darks hamper then to sort everything out on your own!

Find your own laundry “groove”

There are a couple of different camps that moms fall into when it comes to washing laundry. There are the “once a week” moms, the “one load a day” moms, the “twice a week” moms, the “sorted by person” moms, and probably a few more that I’m forgetting to mention. Whatever your laundry style, getting into a routine will help you stay on top of the washing.

Get a washer that can handle your life

Honestly, it’s much wiser to do as much laundry as you can on the weekend, so everyone has full dressers of fresh clothes for school and work on Monday. I double-check the calendar as I’m building our weekly dinner menu. That way I know ahead of time that Logan will need his dark jersey for the lacrosse game, or that I need to wash something specific for a school spirit day (like what are you supposed to wear for dress like an animal day??). Then I only have to wash a few things maybe once during the week.

LG TwinWash system at Best Buy

The “once a week” plan works best if you have a washer that can effectively clean large loads. What I love about this LG TwinWash system is that these washers have mega capacity. Plus, their energy efficient technology results in a quality clean that’s easy on the electric bill – and better for the environment!

Make sure to find your LG TwinWash system at Best Buy, where from 1/11 to 4/25 you can get $500 off your purchase of a laundry solution for your home. A few more reasons why the TwinWash system is my favorite are

  • it’s a front-load system
  • you can choose to wash a big load in the top loader, and a smaller load in the bottom SideKick pedestal washer at the same time!

**Hot Tip**

For the rebel moms out there who don’t always sort their laundry, I do have one timesaver tip. Use your washer as your hamper, and just start it up once it’s got a load’s worth of laundry in it. Granted, this is not the recommended method to wash your clothes. You might sacrifice the life of your bright colors if you choose to skip the sorting. But you do save time and the trouble of dealing with loads and hampers.

This is a great time to take advantage of the $500 off on a laundry system at Best Buy. What feature of the TwinWash would you use the most? The SideKick pedestal washer, for small “need it now” loads? Or the mega capacity of the top loader?   Laundry Systems for busy moms Some timesaver tips, amazing washer and dryers, and how you can get your kids to help!

Design Inspiration for the Modern Home Kitchen

This is a sponsored post written on behalf of Samsung Home Appliances . All opinions are my own.

Last week was the Pacific Coast Builders Conference in San Diego, and I got to take a peek at what a modern home kitchen can do. These appliances are so innovative, and also a little intimidating because they just might be smarter than I am! This particular model kitchen was set up with the Samsung Chef Collection. The appliances in this kitchen are super user-friendly for the average family, but also meet the expectations of top chefs. Check them out!  samsung chef collection model kitchen

Modern Home Kitchen Appliances Are Wifi Enabled!

Ok, I don’t get out much so maybe this has been around for a while and I’m just out of it. But the wifi functionality is what made me fall in love with the Samsung Chef Collection. Even with my prepped-and-planned shopping list, there is always some ingredient that I forgot to make sure I have on hand before leaving the house. This refrigerator takes a picture of its contents as the door shuts, so you can just check the app on your smartphone and see what’s in the fridge… From the grocery store!

Samsung Chef Collection refrigerator meets the needs of a modern kitchen design

Those little black circles are where the camera is!

The refrigerator, one of the 10 appliances in the Chef Collection, has a 4-Door Flex configuration. The FlexZone™ compartment (shown on the bottom image) goes from a fridge to a freezer with the touch of a button!

Modern kitchen design elements and innovative technology

The bottom freezer area has temperature-control so it can be used as a crisper if you need more fridge space!

Having a modern home kitchen can be a real time saver because this mama has an hour+ commute home from work. That gets a little frustrating when I know I have to get dinner in the oven, which I can’t do until the oven actually heats up first. If I had the Samsung Chef Collection oven, I could preheat it from my phone (not while driving, of course) so it was ready for that frozen lasagna as soon as I get home. These premium appliances really help streamline and simplify life, don’t they?

I love the sleek design of the wall oven. Can you see me in the reflection? Haha!

The Samsung Chef Collection is Chef-Approved

Chef Christopher Kostow visited the model kitchen and gave a demonstration on the cook top. It uses Virtual Flame Technology™ so you know the precise heat you’re cooking with. It’s so cool that, in today’s modern times, products like these reflect what’s important to the modern millennial family.

The dishwasher is extremely quiet, at 38 decibels. That’s somewhere between “silent library” and “quiet household room”. The WaterWall™ Technology dedicates some extreme hydropower to clean pots, pans, and casserole dishes while being gentle on your cookware.

The Design is Integrated with your Cabinetry

All of these appliances are flush mounted so that they blend right in with the surfaces in your kitchen. I’m enamored by the sleek, modern look of this model kitchen. The cooking range has a timeless design, while the hood gives a professional elegance to the room. This line is so new, it’s not even available to the public until the fall. When the product line does hit the market, you can find the Samsung Chef Collection wherever built-ins are sold.

Looking at the drab 1980’s cabinets and outdated appliances in my kitchen, I’m thinking it’s time for an upgrade. Which of the appliances in the Samsung Chef Collection would you want in your kitchen?

Great ideas for some of the best home appliances in modern kitchen design. If you have a contemporary or open layout, these black matte elements will go nicely with light or dark cabinets from @SamsungHomeAppliances #whereinnovationlives #ad

A Family Binder Cover Page | Printable

One of my favorite things to do is sit down with a hot coffee and write out plans. I like to set a timeline for what I’m going to teach or map out the family’s meals for the week. It makes me feel at peace to know what will be ahead in the coming days. Over the years I’ve learned that it helps to keep all my notes in one place. I don’t know how many times I’ve put something in a “special spot” only to, later on, totally forget where it is. I’m putting together a binder, starting with this family binder cover page, where we can keep all of our calendars, plans, schedules, and other important information all in one place.

img_6215

I had a lot of fun making the cover for our family binder cover page. I went with a chevron pattern in blue and green, but you can print it in black and white if you’re not into the colors. It was pretty simple to whip up, and it gives a nice touch to the front of the binder. I slid the cover page inside a 1-inch binder with a cover sleeve and, voila! A brand new family binder ready to be filled with all sorts of lists and schedules. To get your copy, just right-click and save the image below or click here for the pdf version.

organization family binder cover page

I’m still thinking about what else needs to go in the binder. At school I need to keep track of student data, test scores, lesson plans, birthdays and other student information. But at home? I’m a lot less organized.

A nice cover on my family binder should put me in the right frame of mind to get a system of organization in place. We already plan out a week’s worth of dinner recipes. Now that Logan is in sports it’s helpful to have his game and practice schedule handy as well.

It’s possible that I see a cute shopping list printable somewhere in the near future since, for now, I just use a simple sheet of lined paper as a shopping list.

Maybe you can help me out?

What other sections does a family binder need? Emergency contact information? Medication schedules? If you can think of any planning or informational record keeping pages, I’d really appreciate your input.

I hope you enjoy the free printable. Happy planning!

DIY Bathroom Organizer and Toilet Paper Holder

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #MegaPrepped #CollectiveBias

I finally took the plunge and simplified our bathroom organizer and replaced it with a pretty, DIY toilet paper holder. It was a lot of fun to make, and very easy! All it took was some paint, a crate, and some decorative shells.

DIY_bathroom_organizer

Finding a good bathroom organizer can be tricky when you live in a small home. We used to have used a tall, narrow shelf/cabinet piece in our bathroom for many years. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago it broke! This was probably for the better, because it was becoming a catch-all for hair ties, half-empty shampoo bottles, clips, razors, and about a zillion other toiletries. I’ve always wanted to do some sort of DIY crate shelf/organizer for the bathroom, and it seemed that now was the time.

Disclosure: Some links may be affiliate.

Materials I used for my DIY bathroom organizer and toilet paper holder

Small wooden crate, found at most craft stores
Craft paint in robin’s egg blue
½ inch craft “chip brush” or any small basic paint brush
Contact paper
Scissors or hobby knife
Shells and starfish, found on Amazon Prime or at local craft stores
Hot glue gun

Our main bathroom is beach-themed, so I wanted to stick with ocean colors and accents. I had wanted to use a wooden wine crate because repurposing is my favorite thing these days. But it was too shallow for actually holding much stuff, so I went with a store-bought crate instead. The contact paper was from a project that I had wanted to do about 8 months ago, but I never got around to it. It turned out to be the perfect way to line the bottom of my bathroom organizer. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. 🙂

An easy-to-make bathroom organizer

bathroom_organizer_crate_craft

First, give the crate a good coat of paint. I left the interior base alone, since I knew I would be covering it with contact paper. Let the paint dry and add a second coat to any streaked sides.

Measure the interior base of the crate to see how much contact paper you will need. My carpenter friend always says measure twice, cut once!      painted_bathroom_organizer_craft_idea Next, carefully cut out and stick on the contact paper. Puncture any bubbles with a pin and smooth them out with a credit card.

Use a hot glue gun to attach some seashells to the crate. After much debate, I decided to go with a “cluster” arrangement for the shells. My artsy friends advised me to start with a large shell, and arrange the smaller ones around it. I think I might still add a few sand dollars to the back wall, so they show up when you take the top toilet paper roll out.    beach_themed_bathroom_organizer_and_toilet_paper_holder

I tried out my little bathroom organizer and toilet paper holder on the floor in the upstairs bathroom.    DIY_beach_themed_bathroom_organizer_and_toilet_paper_holder

In the end I thought it would work best in the main bathroom as a shelf. My little guys splash in the bath too much to have this cute crate near the tub!    DIY_beach_theme_bathroom_organizer_shelf_toilet_paper_holder

It turned out that this crate is the perfect size for the toilet paper that we use. With Baby John starting to use the potty (*gasp! My baby is potty training!*), the Quilted NorthernÂŽ Ultra Soft & StrongÂŽ with Cleanstretch (9 Mega Rolls) is just right for a big family like ours. I like keeping a few rolls of toilet paper where people can find them so guests don’t get caught in one of those embarrassing “these folks are out of toilet paper” situations.

And is it just me, or does it feel like every time Mom uses the bathroom, it’s out of toilet paper? The Quilted NorthernÂŽ Mega Rolls are 4x bigger than their regular rolls, so they last a lot longer. When they say “mega”, they’re not kidding! I love the thought of me not replacing the toilet paper on such a frequent basis. Maybe my next tutorial will be a “how to replace the toilet paper roll” video for husbands and teens. 😉

We get our Quilted NorthernŽ Ultra Soft & StrongŽ with Cleanstretch from the Walmart Neighborhood Market, but you can also find it at Walmart online and pick it up at a Walmart location near you.  quilted_northern_Ultra_soft_and_strong_DIY_bathroom_organizer

Whether you have a big bathroom or a small bathroom, it seems there is not always enough space for everything to fit nicely. Or maybe things that are kept in the bathroom could use a more eye-catching way of being displayed.

We have a teeny bathroom, so I’m always on the lookout for fun new ideas for organization. After scouring the internet one day, I compiled all of my favorites into a collection of unique bathroom organization solutions.
