Christmas Lights Scavenger Hunt

Is it just me, or is there something so wonderful about how excited kids get when they see Christmas lights? During the holidays we have a Christmas tradition: We all pile in the van one night with cups of hot cocoa and check out the local lights displays. To make the event more interactive, I’ve put together this printable. Now instead of simply looking at the lights, our adventure includes a Christmas lights scavenger hunt!

One year we went to a see a San Diego neighborhood that is notorious for having outrageous decorations at Christmas time. When we got there we parked along the sidewalk in a community that, at any other time of year, would appear to be just an average suburb. But in December the houses and yards are transformed into beautiful displays of sparkling lights and inflatable characters.

This picture was taken a few year back at Candy Cane Lane in San Diego. Pardon the poor photography! 😉     the year we went to candy cane lane for a christmas lights scavenger hunt

We saw some pretty unique arrangements in Candy Cane Court. One house had a 4-foot-long alligator in all green lights. Maybe they were trying to start a Cajun theme? And, being that we ARE in San Diego, there were plenty of Chargers bolts and blue-and-yellow-lit houses. I added the “blue lights” to the Christmas lights scavenger hunt just to make it challenging. 🙂

Going out to look at Christmas lights with the family is a simple and fun Christmas tradition. It doesn’t cost much more than a gallon or two of gas, and the kids love getting to cruise around town with their travel mugs of hot chocolate. We get a kick out of looking for the most original decorations.
