I went to an early screening of Pete’s Dragon last weekend. It worked out perfectly that the movie was showing less than a block away from a conference I was at in LA. I’ve been very curious how Disney was going to present this remake of a 1977 classic. Let me tell you, they did an amazing job. While there is a lot I could share with you about this movie, I’ve narrowed it down to my three favorite things.
My three favorite things about Pete’s Dragon
The characters
Pete, played by Oakes Fegley, is the sweetest kid you could ever meet. I fell in love with his energy and adorable messy hair! And Elliott has all the spunk and playfulness of a household puppy. Those two were my favorite to watch on the screen, but the rest of the cast was great as well. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought I noticed hints of Mickey Rooney’s portrayal of Lampie from the original Pete’s Dragon in the way that Robert Redford played out some scenes as Mr. Meacham.
The scenery
The scenery in this movie is just breathtaking. Set in the Pacific Northwest, spectacular mountain peaks and deep canyons create a rugged natural backdrop.
The message
Throughout the movie Pete’s Dragon there is a recurring theme of loyalty, faith, and family. Pete and Elliott share a bond that is stronger than a friendship. Elliot is the only family that Pete has, and Elliott defends Pete with the fierceness of a father.
Pete’s Dragon is the perfect end-of-summer movie. But you don’t have to leave the movie experience behind you at the theater. I’ve attached some printables below so you can enjoy your favorite characters at home, too. Click on the link for each printable.
